Roy Nelson’s situation has gone from bad to worse.
After Nelson (20-12 MMA, 7-8 UFC) suffered his fifth loss in his past six fights against Josh Barnett (34-7 MMA, 6-2 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 75 in September, “Big Country” will be on the sidelines for an undetermined period of time due to a broken hand.
The heavyweight revealed the injury on his official Facebook page along with an x-ray.
Nelson, No. 15 in the NOS Energy Drink MMA heavyweight rankings, lost an exciting unanimous decision to No. 9-ranked Barnett after five rounds in the UFC Fight Night 75 headliner in Saitama, Japan.
Although Nelson had moments of success in the contest, Barnett’s pace and offensive output over 25 minutes was enough to wear Nelson down for a clear decision on the scorecards.
Nelson didn’t reveal at exactly which point in the contest he suffered the injury. However, it marks the second consecutive fight for the UFC heavyweight in which he left the octagon with a damaged hand.
Following his loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 185 in March, reports surfaced that Nelson had broken his hand. Surgery was not required to repair the break, which appears to be the case again with the latest injury.
